Hockey Preview: Merrimack makes one more trip to Matthews
Merrimack hits the road and plays what could be the program’s final game at Matthews Arena on Saturday night.
Northeastern is scheduled to begin constructing a new arena next season, requiring the demolition of Matthews Arena. The arena is still going through the planning stages with the City of Boston, but Saturday’s game is likely Merrimack’s last trip to the historic building.
Matthews Arena opened in 1910 and was the original home of the Boston Bruins. After a fire and rebuilding in 1921, the Bruins played there from 1924 to 1928 before moving to Boston Garden.
The Boston Celtics played at Matthews Arena from 1946-55.
Over the years, Matthews hosted numerous political rallies, including speeches by Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Herbert Hoover, and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
The Doors and Phish are two of the most notable music acts to have shows at Matthews.
