Joe Exter named head coach of St. Cloud Norsemen
Former Merrimack goaltender Joe Exter was named the GM and head coach of the St. Cloud Norsemen in the NAHL.
“I am thankful for the opportunity that [St. Cloud Noresemen owner] Chris [Mitri] has given me to lead the Norsemen,” Exter said. “St. Cloud is an ideal junior hockey location. This a great opportunity for me to help develop and impact the lives of young men. Our organization will be driven by a team first environment that will be the foundation we lean on to achieve all goals throughout the season.”
Exter, 45, was Merrimack’s goaltender from 2000-03 and captained the team in 2002-03. After retiring as a player in 2005, he began his coaching career as an assistant coach at AIC.
Exter was at Michigan State from 2017-22. For the last two seasons, he was the associate head coach and assistant GM of the Iowa Heartlanders in the ECHL. Before Michigan State, Exter was an assistant coach at Ohio State from 2011-17 and he was the goalie coach for the U.S. NTDP from 2007-11.
“Having spent four years coaching at the USNTDP followed by 11 years coaching in the Big Ten I understand how important these years are for players seeking to play at the college level and beyond,” Exter said. “For the past two years, I’ve coached at the professional level. I’m excited to host all upcoming camps as these camps will give me the opportunity to reconnect with the junior age group. These camps will be an important first step as we build the team we want to have in St. Cloud.”
