Several Merrimack alums have new homes for the upcoming 2024-25 season, including defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic, who was traded to the New Jersey Devils earlier this month.
Kovacevic is one of eight alumni under an NHL contract, which, to my knowledge, is the most NHL contracts at one time in the history of the program.
The Ontario native is just four points shy of Steve McKenna to become Merrimack’s all-time leading NHL scorer. Kovacevic is already No. 2 on the all-time NHL games played list (143), only behind McKenna (373).
Kovacevic will be reunited with former Merrimack coach Mark Dennehy, who is the chief scout for the Devils. Dennehy is listed as the top individual in the scouting department for the Devils on the team’s website.
