MAAC considering re-branding
The Times Union reported last week that the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (the MAAC) is considering re-branding and changing its name.
MAAC commissioner Travis Tellitocci said that the league has struggled with its identity outside of the Northeast and could make a minor change or no change at all, depending on the outcome of internal discussions with league members, including Merrimack.
Tellitocci mentioned that there is often confusion between the MAAC and the MAC.
"Our identity isn't really well understood," he said. "We're often referred to as 'the MAAC with two As,' or 'the MAAC that doesn't have football' or 'the other MAAC.' Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, it's a bit of a mouthful. So there's often even confusion about what that stands for. We frequently get 'Mid Atlantic' or some other misinterpretation. It's a challenge I think we continue to navigate as we look to strengthen our brand and our identity.
"At the end of the day, there might be a desire to keep things exactly how they are," he said. "I just think it's important to have the conversation and explore ways to better brand ourselves, not only in the Northeast, where there's a stronger recognition, but nationally as well."
