NORTH ANDOVER -- Merrimack thought it had secured a last-second win over Marist on Sunday afternoon at Lawler Arena, but an official’s review ruled that the ball left Bryan Etumnu’s hands just a tick late, nullifying his last-second bucket and handed Marist a 61-60 win.
With Marist trailing 60-59, Elijah Lewis blocked a shot with 14 seconds left. Jaden Daughtry collected the rebound and fed Tarik Watson for the go-ahead layup with seven seconds remaining.
Merrimack didn’t call a timeout after the bucket. Budd Clark found Etumnu for layup at the rim but it was less than a second late.
Clark led the Warriors (14-12, 11-4) in scoring, finishing with 19 points, six assists and three steals. Merrimack got 13 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks from Etumnu. Sean Trumper recorded 10 points and four assists.
Elijah Lewis had 13 points to lead the Red Foxes.
The Warriors lost two games in a row this weekend, the first time they’ve done so since November.
The Warriors will host Sacred Heart on Friday.
Marist has become the cardiac kids of the MAAC this year. Every game seems to come to the end. Hopefully it won't be close against Canisius, and Marist can take back the top spot in the conference this week. Go Red Foxes.
