Inductees including Stephane Da Costa (men's hockey), Joe Clancy (football), Darin Mency (men's basketball), Kathryn Morgis (softball)
Merrimack announced its Class of 2024 inductees into the Merrimack Athletics Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place tonight as part of Homecoming Weekend.
The class includes Stephane Da Costa (men's hockey), Joe Clancy (football), Darin Mency (men's basketball), and Kathryn Morgis (softball).
Stéphane Da Costa '17, Men's Hockey
During a period of great achievement for the Merrimack men's hockey team, Stéphane Da Costa stood out. During his two years with the Warriors, Da Costa was one of the best collegiate hockey players in the country, helping Merrimack to reach the very top of the national polls.
A true freshman in 2009, he led the team in scoring with 16 goals and 29 assists for 45 points. He won the Tim Taylor Award, given to the most outstanding rookie in the country. He is the only Warrior ever to win the award. He was also named a Hockey East All-Star.
He continued his dominance in his sophomore year, once again leading the team in points. That season was also one of the most successful for the team, as the Warriors held the No. 1 spot in the national rankings, finished with 25 wins, reached the Hockey East finals and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time in more than 20 years. For his efforts that season, Da Costa was named an All-American, a Hockey East All-Star and a member of the Hockey East All-Academic Team.
Following his time at Merrimack, Da Costa signed with the Ottawa Senators playing parts of four seasons in the NHL. He currently plays in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) in Russia where he has been a three-time All-Star.
Joe Clancy '13, Football
Joe Clancy redefined the quarterback position at Merrimack College, leading an offense that was fast, prolific and unrelenting.
During his career at Merrimack, there were not many other Division II collegiate quarterbacks who matched his skillset and today he remains the College's all-time leader in six categories including passing yards, touchdowns and yards per completion.
In 2012, he led the Northeast-10 conference with 323 completions for 3,945 yards and 31 touchdowns in 10 games, and only three other quarterbacks in the country threw for more yards than Clancy did.
He was named the 2012 Northeast-10 Conference Offensive Player Of The Year, earned All-Region distinction and won the Harry Agganis Award for Senior Achievement.
Clancy followed up his stellar 2012 campaign with an even more impressive 2013 season, highlighted by the fact he became the first quarterback in the history of the NE-10 to throw for more than 4,000 yards. He also broke the single-season conference records for completions, attempts and touchdown passes.
He finished the season ranked third nationally in passing yards, second in touchdown passes and ended his Merrimack career with every major single-game, season and career passing record.
Darin (Dee) Mency, Jr. '11, Men's Basketball
In college basketball, scoring 1,000 points in a career is a tremendous accomplishment. Darin Mency did it two times over.
The fifth Warrior ever to surpass 2,000 points in program history, Mency was instrumental in some of men's basketball's most successful seasons at the Division II level. In his first season with the Warriors, Mency averaged 17.7 points a game, good for fourth-best in the conference as well as the NE-10 and ECAC freshman of the year awards. In 14 games that year, he scored over 20 points.
He eclipsed that 1,000 milestone in only his sophomore year en route to a Northeast-10 All-Conference Second Team honor. The Warriors that year made their second consecutive trip to the Division II NCAA Tournament, beating UMass-Lowell in the first round thanks in part to Mency's 29 points and 11 rebounds.
The following season, Mency was named a preseason All-American honorable mention by The Sporting News and proceeded to average 16.9 points per game all while achieving a team-high for rebounds per contest (7.4) and being the high scorer in nine games for Merrimack.
In his senior season, Mency led the Warriors in scoring averaging 20.5 points a game, second most in the conference that season, was named to the NE10 All-Conference First-Team and a National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II All-American.
Kathryn Morgis '02, Softball
In the pantheon of Merrimack softball, Katie Morgis holds a special space. As an Individual and teammate, Morgis had a storybook career that many only dream of.
Four years, four NCAA tournament appearances, four NE-10 regular season championships and three NE-10 tournament championships. How's that for a dynasty?
And Morgis was an important part of those successes. She was a conference rookie of the year, two-time Second-Team All American and two-time NE-10 First-Team honoree.
She still holds the program record for career batting average, career hits and career RBIs. She is the only player to hold multiple spots on the list of most hits in a single season, coming in at No. 1 and No. 7. Morgis also holds multiple sports on the list for most RBIs in a single season, coming in at No. 3 and No. 4, and only other player in Merrimack history posted a better single-season batting average than Morgis' .490 in 2002.
