Merrimack falls to Alabama State in overtime
In what was far from a banner day in the shooting department, Merrimack fell to Alabama State 66-60 in overtime on Saturday to close out the Samford MTE in Alabama 1-2.
The Warriors (3-4) shot just 18 for 56 from the field. Alabama State (3-4) was just 20 for 63.
Freshman guard Budd Clark led the Warriors with 12 points. Jordan Derkack had 11 points, and transfer Sambia Diallo also had 11 points.
The Warriors had a six-point lead with eight minutes to play. ASU tied the score, but the Warriors went on a 7-0 run to take a comfortable lead again in the final minutes. However, the Hornets then went on a 7-0 run of their own to tie the game, 52-52. Regulation ended with the game tied 56-56.
The Hornets took a 60-58 lead in overtime after Sean Smith hit a jumper with 2:03 to play. Down the stretch, the Hornets hit 6 of 8 free throws to hold on for the win.
NOTES: Bryan Etumnu led the Warriors with nine rebounds. ... Derkack had four steals. ... The Warriors turned the ball over 18 times. ... In the first half, both teams shot under 30 percent from the floor. Merrimack was 7 for 24 (29.2%) and ASU was 8 for 30 (26.7%).
