Merrimack promotes Mike Gennetti to head football coach
Merrimack will promote Mike Gennetti to head coach of the football program, sources tell The Mack Report. An announcement could come as soon as Monday evening, but will come shortly.
Gennetti has been the associate head coach and defensive coordinator for the Warriors. Gennetti began his career at Merrimack as the linebackers coach.
In 2022, Genentti was named the Assistant Coach of the Year by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston.
Gennetti was named the interim head coach last week when Dan Curran stepped down to take the Holy Cross job.
The longest-tenured member of the coaching staff, Genentti recently completed his 19th season at Merrimack.
Gennetti's defense was one of the best in the FCS last season. The Warriors were ranked in the top 40 in several categories and were top 5 in three categories, including:
No. 1 in third-down defense
No. 4 in defensive first downs
No. 5 in defensive yards
No. 5 in passing yards
No. 24 in points allowed
No. 31 in sacks
No. 35 in rushing yards
No. 37 in turnovers
All of those rankings are out of 122 FCS programs.
In addition to Gennetti, Merrimack received interest from several other high-level FCS coordinators, including two whose teams advanced to the FCS semifinals this season.
