Merrimack’s Mejail Sets NCAA Coaching Record in 46th Season Opener
Merrimack women’s soccer coach Gabe Mejail etched his name into NCAA history on Thursday night, taking the field for his 46th season as an NCAA head coach — a feat no one before him has accomplished.
The 71-year-old Mejail passed the legendary Anson Dorrance, who led North Carolina for 45 seasons through 2024. Mejail’s career resume is staggering: a 524-277-72 record that began with four seasons at Wheaton College (1979-82) before he planted roots at Merrimack.
He built the Warriors’ program from scratch in 1983, and by year three, they were league champions. Since then, winning has become the standard in North Andover. Entering this fall, Mejail had posted a winning record in 37 of his 41 seasons at Merrimack — a level of consistency most coaches only dream about.
Thursday’s milestone match ended in a 1-1 draw against Vermont. Sophomore Kaitlyn Brewi turned in a star performance with 16 saves. Freshman midfielder Kyle Fuller provided the lone strike for the Warriors.
