Phil Gaetano joins the staff at Saint Louis
Merrimack assistant basketball coach Phil Gaetano has left the program and joined the program at Saint Louis as an assistant coach. He’ll work for Josh Schertz, who was just hired as the new head coach this offseason; he was previously at Indiana State.
"I have known Phil for a long time, have tried to hire him previously, and I am thrilled to be able to hire him here at SLU," Schertz said. "Phil brings so much to the table – he is incredibly smart, has great energy and is great on the court. He is an elite player-development guy, recruits at a high level, and is a basketball savant from an Xs and Os standpoint. Phil has a great work ethic and is a terrific connector and relationship builder. He is going to make a massive impact on our program and players."
Gaetano had been an integral part of the Merrimack staff for the last six seasons.
“So happy for this guy!!” Merrimack head coach Joe Gallo tweeted. “Deserves everything that comes his way. Was never worried about what’s next just kept the main thing the main thing and focused on making us better everyday! We had a great 6 year run together, now how about a game [Josh Schertz]?”
Merrimack’s staff still consists of Gallo, assistant coaches Micky Burtnyk, Juvaris Hayes, Chris Mohr, and Cedric Gillette.
