Providence runs away from Merrimack in Ledyard Bank Championship
HANOVER, N.H. — Providence raced to a three-goal lead in the first period and the Friars kept their foot on the gas throughout the afternoon, beating Merrimack 6-1 on Saturday in the championship game of the Ledyard Bank Classic.
Matt Copponi scored for the Warriors. Nick Poisson and Bennett Schimek both scored a pair of goals for the Friars.
Merrimack fell to 14-5 on the season with the loss. Providence improved to 11-4-5 on the season.
Merrimack entered the night ranked No. 4 in the Pairwise, and the Warriors fell to No. 6 immediately following the game.
