We’re about to turn the calendar to February, which means it’s time to start projecting which recruits we could see in a Merrimack uniform next season.

Before we go any further … these are my projections. I think that goes without saying, but I just wanted to make the point.

Obviously, much of that hinges on how many players depart via graduation, the transfer portal, or by signing pro contracts.

We already know there are three forward spots open. Luke Weilandt and Riley Bassen left during the season, and Mark Hillier will graduate at the end of the year.

On the back end, there’s always the possibility that one or more juniors could graduate early. That’s fairly common, given that some players arrive on campus with college credits and many take summer courses. That said, there are no seniors on defense whose NCAA eligibility will expire this spring.

Between the pipes, Max Lundgren is already drawing NHL interest. I spoke with an NHL scout last week who estimated Lundgren could have “8–10 offers” once the season ends. That’s easy to believe. He’s been one of the top goaltenders in Hockey East — and nationally — this season, with the added bonus that he stands 6-foot-5.

For the purposes of this exercise, I’m projecting three forward openings, one to two defensemen, and one goaltender. As always, those numbers could change depending on portal activity and potential NHL signings.

Forwards (3 projected spots)

The first addition is straightforward. Alex Mercier is an ’05, meaning his junior eligibility expires and he has to arrive this fall. Mercier looks ready. He’s produced consistently in the QMJHL, and all indications are that he plays with an edge that should translate well to the college game.

The other two spots are more up for debate.
