Sacred Heart hangs on for last-second win over Merrimack
Sacred Heart held on for a last-second 60-59 win over Merrimack on Friday night at Hammel Court.
The loss was Merrimack’s second one-point loss in less than a week following Sunday’s 61-60 loss to Marist.
Matt Becht (11 points) went to the line for three shots with three seconds left, and the Warriors were down three points. Becht hit the first two, but the third shot rimmed out, and time expired before the Warriors could get a second opportunity off the rebound.
The Warriors (14-13, 11-5) were led by Budd Clark, who recorded 18 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Sean Trumper had eight points and four steals.
Both teams play on Sunday. Sacred Heart visits Saint Peter’s, and Merrimack travels to play Iona.
The Warriors are now 2.5 games back of Marist and Quinnipiac for first place in the MAAC. The Warriors also have to be aware of Mount St. Mary’s, which won on Friday and is just one game back of the Warriors in the loss column
