Takeaways: Merrimack's process getting better despite third-period issues against BU
Boston University scored four goals in the third period to beat Merrimack 6-3 last night at Agganis Arena.
Michael Citara, Ivan Zivlak, and Caden Cranston scored goals for the Warriors. Former Warrior Matt Copponi had two goals for BU.
Here are my takeaways from Friday’s game:
— The Warriors didn’t have a great start, allowing the first goal of the game inside two minutes, but the pushback after allowing that goal was some of the best hockey the Warriors have played all season.
BU goalie Mathieu Caron has been shaky in recent weeks. Scoring so quickly after going down 1-0 (Ivan Zivlak scored 42 seconds later) was almost as good as scoring the game’s first goal. From a confidence standpoint, I think it accomplished the same thing.
After going down 1-0, Merrimack outshot BU 30-16 over the next 38 minutes and outscored the Terriers 3-1.
That was the best stretch of hockey Merrimack has played to date. They weren’t a victim of long stretches hemmed in the D-zone. They generated their own offensive possession and scoring chances. After falling behind early to Stonehill, they did the same, but BU is a giant step up in competition.
