A team of college hockey players will participate in the Spengler Cup this December. It’s the first time a team of select college players will participate in the tournament. North Dakota went as a team in 1982 and Minnesota went as a team in 1981.

The Spengler Cup is an annual invitational tournament in hosted by HC Davos in Switzerland. This year’s tournament will take place Dec. 26-31.

“We are honored by the invitation to participate in the Spengler Cup, one of the most prestigious hockey events in the world,” said Sean Hogan, College Hockey Inc. Executive Director. “The opportunity to field a team of NCAA student-athletes is a testament to the elite level of play within college hockey and represents an incredible experience for everyone involved—players and staff alike.”

The team will officially be called the U.S. Collegiate Selects will be comprised of active D-I players representing all six conferences and the independent programs. The roster and coaching staff will be named at a later date.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be sending a college hockey team to participate in the Spengler Cup,” said HCA President and Hockey East Commissioner Steve Metcalf. “The players that get selected will have an unforgettable experience at the oldest club tournament in the world.”

The team was spearheaded by College Hockey Inc. and the Hockey Commissioner’s Association. Last year’s rule changes regarding participation against professional players opened the door for NCAA players to compete in the tournament.
