Welsher shines in the big moment
Mac Welsher has been a regular in the Merrimack lineup since his freshman year. But, he hasn’t always been a regular in situations at the end of a game, with an extra attacker on the ice and the Warriors looking for the equalizer.
That changed on Saturday night.
Down 1-0 with about one minute left, Merrimack head coach Scott Borek called Welsher’s number. Not only was he one of the six players jumping over the boards for the game’s most important shift, but he was also the one tasked with taking the faceoff.
Borek thought that Welsher was one of the best players on the ice on Saturday night in Merrimack’s 2-1 win over No. 5 UMass. He’s always been tenacious as a forechecker and his motor never quits. More recently, he’s been able to generate more chances offensively.
The way the play transpired was poetic.
