With Ollas off to New York, what's next for the Warriors in goal?
Merrimack junior goaltender Hugo Ollas signed a 2-year entry-level contract with the New York Rangers on Friday. The Rangers drafted Ollas in the seventh round of the 2020 NHL Draft.
NHL entry-level contracts are determined by the player's age and the round they were drafted. All entry-level deals are two-way deals, meaning the player is paid a discounted salary if they play in the minors.
Ollas' deal pays him $885,000 if he's on the NHL roster and $75,000 if he's in the minors. The salary accrues daily. According to CapFriendly, the contract also has a $160,000 signing bonus, which will be paid in $80,000 installments for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons.
Christian Felton's deal with Vancouver is slightly different as an undrafted free agent. Felton signed a 1-year entry-level contract with the Canucks. He'll make $950,000 if he's on the NHL roster and $82,500 if assigned to the minors. Felton also received a $95,000 signing bonus, according to CapFriendly. Felton also has $80,000 in potential earnings through performance bonuses.
Felton's departure will affect the blue line, but it's somewhat offset by Mike Brown's expected return. Brown missed all of this past season due to surgery.
Ollas' departure leaves a hole for the Warriors at the goaltender position. Let's take a look at their options.
